Gorilla Families In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi impenetrable national park is the most safari destination for an african safari and is visited for any african vacation safari enthusiasts. Located in the southwest of Uganda, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to nearly half of the worlds remaining mountain gorilla population. The national park has 20 fully habituated groups that are all over the four sectors of the park which include Buhoma, nkuringo, rushaga and ruhija. Every gorilla family has its own story and structure thus making every gorilla trekking experience to feel deeply personal.
BUHOMA SECTOR
Buhoma sector is located in the north part of Bwindi impenetrable national park and its where gorilla trekking started in 1993 and it remains the highlight of an african safari.
- Mubare gorilla family
Mubare is one of the oldest gorilla family and the very first family to be trekked by tourists in 1993 on an african vacation safari. The family offers one of the most approachable and less strenuous treks within the park due to its calm and friendly nature. Their territory lies near the Buhoma trailhead thus making it favorable for tourists on their african safari to hike.
The Mubare family was made up of 12 members led by Ruhondeza silverback but later died in June due to old age thus leaving leadership to alpha male Kanyonyil. He later fell down from the tree and got serious injuries which made him weak and he couldn’t fight for his family thus Malaya silverback took over. The Mubare gorilla family is now made up of 9 members which can be trekked while on an african vacation safari.
- Habinyanja gorilla family
Habinyanja was habituated in 1996 and it was named after the rukiga word Nyanja which meant a place of water. The gorilla family was made up of 25 members at the time of habituation. However, its leader Mugurusi passed on due to old age which caused succession disputes as 3 silverbacks were fighting for power. However, Rwansigazi and Mwirima shared power and led the family up to 2002 when they separated.
Trekking this gorilla family on an african vacation is moderately challenging but more rewarding where it offers intimate views of playful infants, caring mothers and dominate silverbacks managing complex group dynamics.
- Rushegura gorilla family
Having emerged in 2002 from a split from the habinyanja family, the group quickly gained a reputation for being calm and welcoming towards humans. Their home is close to the Buhoma lodges hence making them hone of the most convenient and popular options for tourists on a busy schedule
Watching this family interact while on your african vacation safari is a heartwarming experience from silverbacks standing sentinel to juveniles tumbling through the undergrowth.
- Katwe gorilla family
The newly habituated in 2018, Katwe family offers a fresh dimension to gorilla trekking in the Buhoma sector. Though smaller in number, the gorilla family is famous for its curious and playful behavior thus creating thrilling and unpredictable encounters to tourists seeking unique memories on their african safari. The Katwe group is made up of 9 members where it has 1 silverback, 4 adult females, 2 blackbucks and 2 infants.
- Muyambi gorilla family
The Muyambi gorilla family is the newest gorilla group within Buhoma sector and it was open for trekking in 2019 with only 6 members. Muyambi was a former member of Mubare family which was the very first gorilla family within the Buhoma sector. Hiking the gorilla family on an african vacation safari feels personal and intimate due to its playful members and newborn gorilla babies.
RUSHAGA SECTOR
Located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park, rushaga sector is the most exciting and thrilling sector on an african vacation safari.
- Nshongi gorilla family
The Nshongi gorilla family is found in the rushaga sector and it obtained its name from the Nshongi river where it was first spotted. The river as well was named Nshongi due to the way its waters looked like honey and in the local language it meant Omushongi Gwoboki.
The gorilla family was habituated in 2007 and opened for trekking in 2019 and it boasted with 36 members. But in 2010, the silverback Mishaya broke away from the group with 10 members and formed its own. Famous for its calm and social character, trekking this group on an african vacation safari offers tourists the opportunity to spot gorilla characters from mothers taking care of their young ones to the silverbacks overlooking at its family.
- Mishaya family
The Mishaya gorilla family is headed by the dominant silverback Tinfayo. The Mishaya gorilla family broke from the Nshongi family after a conflict between him and dominant silverback in the Nshongi family. The gorilla family. The gorilla family faced a lot of challenges of leadership and survival in the wild.
Mishaya the silverback died due to obstructions of the intestinal gut in 2014. After his death other members of the group joined other gorilla families since there was no adult male to lead. But later the park officials discovered Tinfayo who was once a member of shongi family. Trekking the Mishaya family is slightly challenging but for tourists searching for an adventurous african safari, the family is the best.
- Kahungye family
The kahungye gorilla family is known as the largest family after habituation. The family was named kahungye because it was first spotted at the kahungye hill. The habituation process of the family started in 2009 and opened to trekking in 2011.
Under the leadership of Ruhemuka, the gorilla family had 27 members until he fell from a tree and injured his head. He eventually died and his group split into two where it was only left with 17 members.
- Busingye family
Busingye family broke away from the Kahungye gorilla family in 2012 and was named after the silverback Busingye. The silverback is famous for his confidence and exploratory nature. Trekking the Busingye gorilla family on an african vacation safari is a thrilling experience and adventurous.
- Bweza family
The bweza family also emerged from the split of the Nshongi group and has since settled into a calm and stable lifestyle. Bweza gorilla family is famous for its gentle and approachable approach thus offering tourists a peaceful and reflective encounter during their african safari.

NKURINGO SECTOR
Located in the southern sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park, nkuringo sector is known for being a paradise for tourists seeking a thrilling and unforgettable african vacation safari.
- Nkuringo gorilla family
The nkuringo family was the first gorilla family to be habituated in the southern Bwindi national park in 1997. The group obtained its name from a Rukiga word Nkuringo which means a round hill. It’s the first group to record the birth of twins in the park.
The group was led by a silverback known as Nkuringo but he later died on 27th April and succeeded by rafiki who was speared down by hunters. Currently the group is led by Rwamutwe and has 12 members.
- Bushaho gorilla family
The Bushaho gorilla group was formed in 2012 where they split from Nkuringo family. Its composed of 10 members and its famous because of its social character and its easy to be trekked by tourists while on an african safari.
- Christmas gorilla family
Named after its dominant silverback who was born on Christmas day, the family has become the most visited among the families in the sector. The Christmas gorilla family is stable and relaxed thus making it ideal for trekkers in search of less challenging but rewarding african vacation safari experience.
- Posho gorilla family
The posho family is the newest gorilla group and it was habituated in 2023 in the nkuringo sector. The gorilla group is not yet used to the human presence but offers an amazing and exciting african safari experience to tourists.
RUHIJA SECTOR
The ruhija sector within Bwindi impenetrable national park is the most rewarding destination for tourists while on an african vacation safari. Located in the north of the park, the ruhija sector offers an amazing encounter with gentle giants.
- Oruzogo gorilla family
The Oruzogo gorilla family is the largest and most dominant gorilla family in the ruhija sector. The gorilla family derives its name from a local plant known as Oruzogoto and it was opened to tourists in 2011 under the leadership of Tibirikwata.
However, the group split in 2021 where Kasimali the silverback left the group with some members. The Oruzogo family is known for being interesting due to its playful nature and energy of its juveniles who entertain tourists while on their african vacation safari.
- Bitukura gorilla family
The bitukura gorilla family was named after the river where it was first spotted. The gorilla family was opened to trekking safaris in 2008 and it has 14 members. The gorilla family is led by Ndahura and its famous for its friendly and social bonds
While on an african safari, trekking the Bitukura gorilla family is relatively challenging but rewarding as you will watch the gorillas playing, breastfeeding and nurturing their young ones.
- Kyaguriro A and B gorilla family
The gorilla family was one of the earliest gorilla families to be habituated in 1995 but is not trekked on african vacation safaris. This gorilla family is only used for research purposes and it was dominated by Zeus and it was later headed by Rukina. Rukina got challenged by another silverback Mukiza who took some members and formed his group.
With that the group was split into two in 2016 where Kyaguriro A was headed by Rukara since Rukina was struck by lightning and Kyaguriro B was headed by Mukiza but these two are always spotted together in one area.
While on an african safari, Kyaguriro was opened for trekking with 15 members but Kyaguriro B was set aside for research.
