DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Goma
The driver guide will pick you from Kigali international airport or hotel. Embark on a scenic 4-5hour drive through the hills of Rwanda to Gisenyi on the shores of lake Kivu. Depending on your preference and visa arrangements, you may spend the night in Gisenyi or cross into Goma and stay near the base of mount Nyiragongo.
Day 2: Hike mount Nyiragongo and overnight at the summit
After an early breakfast, transfer to Kibati ranger post which is Nyiragongo trailhead. Meet your park rangers and fellow hikers for a pre-hike briefing. The Nyiragongo hike takes about 5-6hours and involves steep, rocky trails through forest and lava fields. Upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the molten lava lake glowing dramatically at night.
Spend the night in basic summit cabins, watching the lava swirl and bubble under the stars which is one of the most surreal and awe-inspiring experiences on any African safari.
Day 3: Descend Nyiragongo and return to Kigali
Wake up early, enjoy a light breakfast and begin your descent. The return hike takes around 3-4 hours. At the base, you will meet your driver and transfer back to Goma. After clearing border formalities, drive back through the Rwandan countryside to Kigali. On arrival, you will be dropped off at Kigali international airport for your flight back home.
