DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to Akagera national park
Upon arrival at Kigali international airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your safari guide who will brief you about the adventure ahead. Depending on your arrival time, you will take a short Kigali city tour where you will visit the Kigali genocide memorial, kimironko market and local shops for a glimpse into Rwandan life. After wards, embark on a scenic drive east through rolling hills and rural landscapes to Akagera national park Rwanda’s only Savannah Park. On arrival, you will check into the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Full day game drive
After an early breakfast, head out for a thrilling full day game drive in Akagera. The park is home to the big five that is lion, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos as well as giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles and a variety of antelope. With your guides keen eyes, you will explore diverse habitats from woodland, savannah plains and swamps maximising your chances of spotting wildlife.
Pause for a picnic lunch at a designated spot with sweeping views of the park. Continue game viewing into the late afternoon before returning to your lodge for a hearty dinner under the stars.
Day 3: Morning game drive and boat cruise
Wake up to sounds of nature and head for a final morning game drive to catch predators winding down their night hunt and herbivores grazing in the golden sunrise. After the drive, return for lunch at the lodge.
In the afternoon, take a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Ihema, famous for its large pods of hippos, basking crocodiles and rich birdlife including African fish eagles and kingfishers. The boat cruise offers stunning photography opportunities and tranquil way to close your Akagera experience.
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes national park
Enjoy breakfast with a view before departing for volcanoes national park, a scenic drive of about 4-5 hours through the lush Rwandan countryside and picturesque terraced hillsides. You will stop for lunch in Kigali and continue to your lodge near the park. On arrival, check in and relax as you prepare for the next day activities.
Day 5: gorilla trekking
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by park rangers. You will be assigned a gorilla family and guided through misty bamboo forests and steep slopes. The trek can take from 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorilla’s location.
Once the gorillas are located, you will spend an hour observing these gentle giants up close is an unforgettable experience. Watch them feed, play and interact in their natural habitat. After the trek, return to your lodge to relax and share stories around the fire.
Day 6: Hike to Dian Fossey grave and visit Iby’iwacu cultural village
After breakfast, embark on a hike to the Dian Fossey tomb and Karisoke research centre. This moderate hike offers insight into Dian Fosseys work to protect mountain gorillas and her remarkable legacy. Along the trail, you may encounter golden monkeys, birds and beautiful forest scenery. After, return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, head to the nearby Ibyiwacu cultural village, where you will experience Rwanda’s rich traditions through dance, music and hands on activities like banana beer brewing and traditional hunting demonstrations. After, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Transfer back to Kigali
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and soak up your last moments in the beautiful Virunga region. Depending on your flight schedule, you may visit the local markets or art shops in Musanze for souvenirs. On arrival in Kigali, you will be dropped at the airport for your flight back home.
